It felt like I was dreaming as we walked upstairs to labor and delivery.
You have to be buzzed in by a nurse to get into l&d, but as we got there we saw a nurse who happened to be in our ward at church and she welcomed us and took us in and introduced us to our nurse.
I was laughing as I already knew our nurse. The month before I was in my prenatal class at the hospital when I had at bit of an issue that ended up with me being taken up to l&d to be monitored. This particular nurse who made me go up there was now my nurse. She put me at ease as it was nice to have a familiar face while I was freaking out.
I was hooked up to fluids and pitocin at about 5:30am and started the waiting game. Joe was awesome. Anything I needed, he made sure it was done. We tried to sleep, talked, watched movies.
The nurses laughed because I had packed Christmas movies because the tend to make me feel better. We were watching home alone 2 at one point and a random nurse kept coming in to watch with us.
My dr - Dr Beck came in to check on us some time in the morning and told me if I hadn't progressed by a certain time that day that he would turn the pitocin off and let me eat and have a good rest before started the medicine the next morning again.
I sat there all day with not much happening. We were hoping Kai would come that day because it was Columbus Day and we thought it would be cool for him to be born on a holiday.
Just before it got to the hour when beck would have turned the medicine off, my water broke. It was the weirdest feeling in the world. After that, things started moving a little faster but still taking its time.
There had only been one other mum there when I was. She came in after me and had already pushed her baby out hours before. I was jealous. It felt like it was taking forever, but Kai wasn't ready to come out.
I don't remember when I started getting pain relief but I took anything they would give me. Thanks to my sister Beth, I had gotten some pain relief and then asked for my epidural. She said to do it like that and I wouldn't feel the epidural.
The guy walks in, talks me through everything, tells me what can go wrong and then asks me to sign something saying I was ok with it all. At that point I probably would have signed anything you put in front of me.
The epidural went in and I didn't even realize. As the guy is testing out he asked if I felt anything. I was like felt what!? The contractions had disappeared for me and I could comfortably rest while waiting for Kai to make an appearance. I am soooo glad I got that epidural! Those contractions hurt!!!
At 2am on the 15th I felt I needed to push. I was so tired at this point that I would push and somehow fall asleep between contractions and wake back up and push and then fall back asleep.
I pushed for an hour and started feeling that Kai was stuck. I kept saying to the nurse that he was stuck and she kept saying oh no he is fine. My dr had come in a few hours earlier because he knew I would end up having Kai in the wee hours of the morning. He was sleeping somewhere in the hospital. It would have been easy to wake him up when I said Kai was stuck but the nurse made me push for another hour.
I ended up exhausted and feeling like I couldn't push anymore because I was pushing but nothing was happening. I started to cry as it was horribly painful and the pressure of Kai being stuck was getting worse in told the nurse I couldn't do it anymore and she finally called my dr.
Dr beck walked in the roommate sat down said yep he is stuck! He told me he would help get him out and hooked Kai to the vacuum and within 5 minutes of the dr being there, Kai arrived.
At 4:17 am my life changed. My beautiful little boy had arrived. I was crying, joe was smiling and the nurses were saying how cute he was. I think they automatically say that! You can't tell a baby is cute that soon!
Kai Samuel Cordero Arce was 7lbs 0.1oz and 20 inches long and was perfect!
They handed me Kai and I could not stop looking at him. It felt so surreal. This was my baby! I was so shocked at how much love I felt for him. This perfect little baby had been entrusted to me and I could not believe how lucky we were to have him!
To be continued!
